Dr. Florence Chenoweth, Liberia’s Agricultural Minister was the proud recipient of the prestigious 2011 Africa’s Leadership Prize Award to put a sustainable a end to hunger.

The empowerment of rural women is an integral part of the Ministry’s policy and strategy to revitalizing and boosting the national economy. Toward this end, she has implemented a program called “Operation Eliminate Hunger;” an agriculture Project with the theme “Back to the Soil” that has been very successful under her leadership. This program has already led to a significant rise in the production of our staple food, particularly rice and cassava, and as such, the World Food Programme has begun purchasing locally produced rice from Liberia.!

In January 2011, Liberia was declared rice seed sufficient after and intense collaboration with the United States government and the FAO. Today, the results attained from her efforts of strategically planning and formulating policy that have invigorated agricultural production, but most importantly built institutional and human capacities within the Agricultural Sector amongst others are pleasing.
